Until Sergey’s parents separated and ‘the house broke up, ” the Eisenstein family, on occasion, hosted formal receptions, at which the Livonian Governor was an honorary guest. Probably one of these evenings is depicted in this drawing. The guests are drawn in the form of animals, the echo of Sergey’s passion for the art of caricature and, specifically, the works of French draftsman Jean-Jacques Grandville.

… But now the future desert is teeming with people.
The living room is full of them. Mama’s boudoir as well. Papa’s study too.
All this is just about to rush into the dining room to have dinner.
In the meantime, they are located behind the card tables.
I am at that age when they already let me to see the guests, but they don’t put me at the table yet.
I walk between the guests. I commit them to memory.
Here is the Governor. A thoroughbred head with an eagle look from under thick eyebrows.
But otherwise, he is what is called the “Tischriese, ” “a table giant.”
He’s a giant only to the waist, if you count from the top down.
His legs are short, so he’s small of stature. That is why he is imposing only at the table and disappoints when he rises to his full height.
