Eisenstein analyzes the composition of ‘The Bridge’ by Hokusai from the point of view of the interaction of two opposite principles: Yang and Yin. Yang (white, masculine, warm, firm, odd…) and Yin (black, feminine, cold, soft, even…) are the two interacting principles in the universe, two main cosmic forces of motion. First discovered in Chinese philosophy, they migrated to the Japanese thinking about the world. When examining the composition of this or that work, Eisenstein would sketch its scheme in general and in detail. After drawing Hokusai’s “The Waves” scheme, he revealed its direct prototype — the traditional Yin-Yang scheme in a circle. Eisenstein analyzed the same harmonious interaction of the two principles in the Utamaro triptych “Divers for oysters” from his collection.
