In the summer of 1920, Eisenstein is given permission to return to Petrograd to continue his studies. He, however, refuses to finish the course. He leaves Minsk for Moscow and enters the Academy of the General Staff in order to learn Japanese. Sergei diligently studies the Japanese characters, but it is not the desire to become a military translator that motivates him, but the interest in Japanese culture and the Kabuki Theater. At the same time, he throws himself wholeheartedly into the theater life of Moscow. Eisenstein depicted his arrival in the capital in the style of Japanese engravings. He wrote in the self-caricature in Japanese: ‘Me in Moscow.’
