As a teenager, Eisenstein drew ‘the life of animals’, capturing the similarity of their ways to human behavior. In the 1913 drawing ‘Estates’ he presented the social types of Tsarist Russia. This drawing is made in the manner of the French draftsman Jean-Jacques Grandville, with whose work Eisenstein was familiar since childhood through the collection of satirical novellas ‘The Private and Public Life of Animals, ” From the point of view of an “allegorical” approach to depicting characters, this drawing is close to a fable.
