In this letter from 1914, Sergey wrote to his mother about his school progress in a lively comic manner. The grades are accompanied by the images of the teachers in his favorite caricature style. Sergey sent many similar letters to Petrograd: his mother, Yulia Ivanovna Eisenstein, lived there. Sergey’s parents separated when he was only 10 years old. This event, of course, cast a shadow on the seemingly cloudless childhood and influenced the child’s mindset. The trace of this wound would appear again and again in the memoirs of Eisenstein, written decades later. The Synod legitimized the divorce in 1912, which was not only extremely unusual in itself for that time, but also gave a clear understanding of Mama’s personality: it was an advanced, strong-willed woman, an emancipated woman. However, it would be wrong to think that the family meant nothing to her: in spite of everything, Yulia Ivanovna loved her son very much and always kept in touch with him.
