The 1914 drawing depicts a sphinx who misbehaves on the streets of the city, and then negotiates with the ship captain and returns to its original place, in Egypt. The city where the Sphynx plays pranks, tearing up the inhabitants before escaping to home is Riga, the native town of little Sergey Eisenstein. And not by chance: his father, Mikhail Osipovich Eisenstein, was a prominent engineer and architect, who stayed in Riga for many years for business reasons. The famous Albert Street was built up to a large extent with the buildings of Mikhail Eisenstein in the Art Nouveau style. There was ‘Papa’s house, ” which was decorated with figures of two sphinxes. One of them became the main hero of the story in this humorous drawing. The structure of the drawing resembles a small comic strip or a film storyboard.
