Simakov S.B
Venerable Sergius of Radonezh and Dmitry Donskoi
#2
Artist Sergey Simakov dedicated several paintings to Sergius of Radonezh, the founder of several monasteries and a spiritual leader of the Russian people. His image is closely associated with that of Holy Russia. In the center of the painting we can see Sergius of Radonezh giving his blessing upon Faithful Saint Prince Dmitry Donskoi and the united Russian troops before the Battle of Kulikovo, the decisive battle with Tatar-Mongol troops led by Khan Mamai in 1380.

Sergius of Radonezh is depicted standing on the rock of faith, bathed in holy light, his right hand raised in blessing. Dmitry Donskoi is kneeling before Sergius, and there is a group of people behind his back: they are the future heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo.

Monk warriors Alexander Peresvet and Rodion Oslyabya, drawing by Victor Vasnetsov.

The figures of two warriors dressed in black monastic robes, with spears in their hands, stand out in the picture. They are Alexander Peresvet and Rodion Oslyabya, the monks from the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, the monastery founded by Sergius of Radonezh. Both monks took part in the military campaign and were killed in action.

The characters of this scene are once again portrayed in the left-hand corner of the painting as soldiers of the Russian troops preparing for battle with Mamai. The warriors are holding religious ensigns, holy banners, one of them with the Holy Savior’s image (Vernicle). The image of Our Lady of the Don is glowing in the sky over their heads. According to the legend, the icon with this image was given to Dmitry Donskoi by the Cossacks before the Battle of Kulikovo. The Russian Christian Orthodox Church considers this image to have miracle-working powers.

The battle itself is depicted in the upper part of the painting. The troops are marching into the battlefield with holy banners, with Archangel Michael above their heads. This is not the first battle painting by Simakov: a multi-figure scene of a battlefield is also depicted in the picture The Uglich Devastation, showing the attack of Polish troops on the Monastery of Archangel Michael (The monastery in the forest).

St. Sergius of Radonezh. Tombstone, 1420s. Sergiyev Posad State Museum Reserve.

Sergius of Radonezh is one of the most venerated Russian saints. Moreover, he had been worshipped before the moment when the Russian Christian Orthodox Church established formal rules of canonization. The oldest image of the saint dates back to the 1420s: it was created for a tombstone. The oldest icon of St. Sergius is kept in the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius; it is considered to have been created by one of the artists from the circle of Russian icon painter Dionisius at the end of the 15th century.

Later on, a lot of secular artists portrayed the image of Sergius of Radonezh. Mikhail Nesterov depicted the Saint as a humble toiler, Alexey Kivshenko painted the scene of the blessing of Dmitry Donskoi, and Nicholay Roerich introduced Christian Orthodox, mystic and folklore motives into the image of St. Sergius.
