Artist Sergei Simakov portrayed the view from his Moscow apartment in his painting The Holy Martyr Tryphon. Its windows on the 14-th floor look out on the baroque church of the Icon of Our Lady of the Sign in Pereyaslavl sloboda of the XVIII century and the double Riga overhead road that is part of the Third Ring Road. In the left corner, the author depicted the Christian martyr Tryphon of Apamea.

According to the legend, Tryphon lived in the III century in Asia Minor. Already as an adolescent, he performed many miracles: he healed people and helped the sick, cast out demons and once by the power of his prayer, turned back a plague of locusts thus saving the inhabitants of the Phrygian village Kampsada from hunger. Having seen his deeds, many pagans converted to Christian faith. Soon the word of Tryphon got to Roman authorities — he was seized and put on trial. Despite harsh tortures, he never renounced God and died before the executioners could carry out his death sentence.
In Simakov’s painting, St. Tryphon on a white horse slays the red devil — this subject was not usually depicted on icons but it comes from the life of the Saint. On his left, the artist portrayed a falcon — this is a symbol of the Moscow legend about Tryphon.

According to the legend, once Tryphon Patrikeyev, the falconer of Ivan the Terrible, lost the Tsar’s favorite falcon. It enraged the Tsar and he gave Tryphon three days to find it. On the last day, the falconer saw in his dream St. Tryphon with the bird in his hand. When he woke up, he found the falcon on the nearest tree. On that site, the falconer founded the Church of St. Tryphon in Naprudnoe.

In his painting, Simakov shows a stark contrast between the worldly and the orthodox: he painted the overhead road, rail tracks and standard Soviet buildings in subdued tones, and used the bright red for the church and curling clouds of the sphere containing the image of the Saint. The scarlet color of God’s sleeve, St. Tryphon’s mantle, his boot and the horse harness became the color center of the painting.
In Byzantine icon painting tradition, St. Tryphon is most often portrayed as an adolescent, standing with a cross in his hand. According to the Russian icon painting canons, the Holy Martyr is often portrayed mounted on a horse with a falcon on one arm. Orthodox Christians believe that a prayer to the icon of St. Tryphon helps heal maladies, in old times peasants often prayed to the Saint to save their crops from locusts. People also pray for regaining lost items or lost intangible values — this is related to the Moscow legend about Tryphon.
