The Uglich State Museum of History, Architecture, and Art is one of Russia’s oldest museums. The grand opening ceremony took place on June 3 (15), 1892 and was attended by members of the royal family — Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna.
The museum’s first exhibition was made up of small collections and separate items donated by the representatives of various social groups. In the 1920s, the museum received icons and utensils from closed churches as well as artworks and documents from the estates of former landlords. Nowadays, the collection of the Uglich Museum consists of over 30,000 exhibits. In 2007, the Gallery of Modern Orthodox Art “Under the Grace-Filled Cloak” was opened in the two-story building at Uspenskaya Square in front of the Filippovsky Bridge.
The Uglich State Museum of History, Architecture, and Art is a large complex of unique buildings, including the Church of Saint Tsarevich Dmitry on Blood, the chambers of Uglich appanage princes, the Epiphany Cathedral, the former city duma, the Gallery of Modern Orthodox Art “Under the Grace-Filled Cloak”, and the Transfiguration Cathedral with its bell tower.
