Ilya Mashkov
Tulips on a Platter

‘Tulips on a Platter’, one of the early works of Ilya Mashkov, is displayed at the exhibition. Art critics suggest that the artist created the painting around 1908.

At that time, Mashkov was setting up an art studio of his own. Teaching became a new stage in his life and pushed him to experiment in his own work. Mashkov’s studio became well-known in the art world.

“Ilya Ivanovich had the youngest studio and also the largest one when speaking of the number of permanent apprentices. It was the most expensive studio since the fee was about twice as much as in other best studios in Moscow, ” wrote Mashkov’s apprentice Pavel Sokolov-Skalya. At the same time, Mashkov completed and equipped a workshop in the building of the Polytechnic Society in Maly Kharitonevsky Lane according to his own design, where he worked until the end of his life.

In 1908, the artist made his first trip abroad. He visited 17 cities in France, Germany, Austria, England, Spain and Italy, where he studied classical and contemporary art. Mashkov returned from his trip impressed by the works of Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Paul Gauguin.

The trip abroad gave me a lot of fresh strength and inspiration, and in September I began working harder again with full consciousness and clarity of my art goals.

During this period, Mashkov became close to Mikhail Larionov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Alexander Kuprin, Robert Falk who were the future core of ‘The Jack of Diamonds’ (a group of avant-garde artists).

In his studio, the artist worked on portraits and still lifes, among which were ‘Tulips on a Platter’. The work shows Mashkov’s interest in textured surfaces, in unusual bright colors, in decorativeness.

The avant-garde artist Mashkov never completely rejected the experience of the old masters. His works were characterized by both classical compositions and an appeal to academic subject, that is, not abstract, genres: still lifes, landscapes, portraits.

The painting “Tulips on a Platter” is also a classic still life in composition. Mashkov used a bright palette of warm clean colors — yellow, red, green. The work was created in expressive thick strokes.
