In the 1870s of the 19th century, Karelin became a recognized master of portrait. His photo studio was often visited by famous people of that time: Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, scientist D.I.Mendeleev, artists K.E. Makovsky, V.V.Vereshchagin, I.I.Shishkin, famous collector P.I.Shchukin.
In 1880, as one of the best experts in photography, Karelin became the member of the V department of the Imperial Russian Technical Society for photography and its applications. The department dealt with the development of photography and the photographic industry in Russia. In the monthly magazine ‘Photographer’ Karelin regularly published his articles.
His wife and children often supported every new passion of Karelin.
‘The views of Nizhny Novgorod and the fair were all bought up by foreigners who stopped by in Nizhny during excursions along the Volga. Many didn’t speak Russian, and Olga and Lyudmila spoke to them in German and French. Then they translated foreigners for Andrew… This is how Karelin was famous abroad not only because of exhibitions where he received his first awards’ - from the memoirs of Fomin, Karelin’s student.
