Andrew’s family members supported and shared his interest in art: Olga, his wife, studied in drawing school of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in Saint-Petersburg and took lessons in Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
Karelin’s daughters were named after Pushkin’s female characters: Lyudmila, Olga and Tatiana. They also learned to draw in Nizhniy Novgorod’s Art school that was founded by the photographer himself in 1860s.
Almost all the Karelins took part in I and II Nizhniy Novgorod’s art exhibitions (1886 and 1902) and were members of Nizhniy Novgorod’s society of Art lovers also founded by Karelin (1901).
Nizhegorodians considered the photographer’s house a museum as its owner – Andrew – often organised exhibitions demonstrating different collectibles for public.
