Karelin appeared tremendously successful during Edinburgh International Photo Exhibition in 1876. The exhibition included 6 thousand photographs overall; the pictures were made European and American photographers but were displayed anonymously.
The jury were of two minds: they got stuck at choosing between two photographs to award the author of one of them with golden medal of Royal Academy. Later they were surprised as both pics were made by Russian photographer Andrew Karelin. One of the pictures is ‘Ladies with albums’.
Russian media reflected on the event in the following way: ‘Everyone is trying to pay attention to the Russian celebrity, Andrew Karelin from Nizhniy Novgorod, a decent photographer who outshined all the foreign masters on the Exhibition’.
In 1876 Karelin was honoured as a photographer of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
