V. A. Serov
Portrait of Milusha Mamontova
#4
Valentin Alexandrovich Serov (1865—1911) was a painter and graphic artist, master of portraiture. Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar considered the Portrait of Milusha Mamontova, made by 19-year-old Valentin Serov, ‘the first serious work’ of the young artist.

Created at the beginning of Serov’s career, the Portrait of Milusha Mamontova already bore the main qualities that would later become characteristic of the mature portraitist: psychological persuasiveness, lack of sentimentalism, picturesque laconism. It can be assumed that Serov was sort of close and sympathetic to the image of the girl he had created, unchildishly serious and focused on herself. Being still in childhood, she seems to have some kind of her own, secret life, consonant with the artist’s personality.

V. A. Serov. Autoportrait. 1880s
V.A. Serov’s mother said: “chamber music, until now little known to my son, has chained him to the 'Anatolyevichs'”. The Anatolyevichs are the family of Anatoly Ivanovich Mamontov (1839—1905), a publisher, printer, seller of books from the merchant dynasty of Mamontov, brother of the famous patron of arts Savva Mamontov.

It was by order of Anatoly Ivanovich Mamontov that his publishing house issued, to the 100th anniversary of Pushkin, the beautiful book “The Tale of Tsar Saltan…”, illustrated by Sergey Malyutin, which can be seen in the Parents’ Room.

‘Milusha’ is an affectionate name by which the family and friends used to call Lyudmila, a daughter of Anatoly Ivanovich.
