TE ARII VAHINE (The Queen. The king’s wife)

The king’s wife is one of Gauguin’s best Tahitian artworks. A robust dark-skinned Tahitian woman lies tranquilly and majestically on a bright green carpet of grass on the shore of the turquoise sea, surrounded by exotic fruits and trees. Under the tree, embraced by a serpent, we can see two old men discussing eternal questions and a prowling mysterious animal with bright eyes. A female figure on the left is picking fruit from a tree. This scene is supposed to evoke the image of Eve. At the same time, the idea of paradise is expressed first of all through color and the meaningful arabesque lines. It is these artistic means that create the image of a beautiful Tahitian paradise.

About the composition
#5
Gauguin intentionally repeats the composition of the famous ‘Olympia’ by Édouard Manet, which, in turn, was inspired by Titian’s “Venus of Urbino.” However, the compositional similarity of the pieces only emphasizes the difference between Gauguin’s painting and the works of his predecessors. It can be seen not only in the type of female nudity, but also in the primitive, ‘barbarian’ wealth of shapes and colors of the surrounding nature that the king’s wife is inherently a part of.

The poetry of nature
#7
Gauguin conveyed the poetry of the pristine nature. His art embodies the re-discovered paradise. The painting has bright and reverberant colors, and all its elements intertwine in an ornamental pattern, thus turning the canvas into a decorative tapestry.
