This is one of Gauguin’s first works made in Tahiti, where Tahitian words are written with Latin letters. In this still life with a white jar and big flowers, Cezanne’s influence can be felt. The composition of the painting and the positioning of figures, which are unexpectedly cut off by the frame, correspond to the principle of conscious framing and relate to the traditions of Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas, resembling some of their artworks. Gauguin decided to leave Europe and move to Tahiti in 1891. Thus, the nostalgic title “Flowers of France” has its own special creative subtext: it is the last tribute to the former French icons of art – Cezanne, Degas, and Manet, whom Gauguin always admired.
