The big decorative panel “Gathering Fruit” is Gauguin’s major work. This canvas depicts a beautiful world, where nature generously gives its fruits to people. The Tahitian words that the artist wrote on the canvas mean “the wonderful paradise.” There are three Tahitian women in the painting, and one of them is picking fruit from a tree, just like Eve. They can be seen against a glowing yellow background that resembles the gold from Byzantine icons and mosaics. A sleeping dog with puppies in the right bottom corner symbolizes life, while the horseman in the background is the symbol of death. Just as in many of his late paintings, Gauguin asks the eternal philosophical questions: the meaning of life, humanity’s journey, life and death. The high level of image generalization, the strong feeling of decorativeness, variety, and the colorful rhythm turn this painting into a kind of monumental fresco.
