‘The River Gorge’ was painted by Aishat Daurbekova, a people’s artist of the Republic of Ingushetia. She created it in 2000.
A gorge is a deep mountain valley with steep cliffs on its sides. Such valleys occur when a river washes its way through a mountain range. Unlike a canyon, however, the bottom of the gorge still has some land, so people often use them as a natural pass.
There are many picturesque rivers in Ingushetia with different branches, mostly all of them flow down from the mountains. Therefore, there are also many beautiful gorges with steep rapids and boulders.
The artist captured one of such gorges in early autumn. She built the composition of the painting on the intersections of broken and smooth lines. One can see how sharp mountain ranges chime with the rugged zigzag-shaped shores and rocky ledges. At the same time, the slight curves of the path, tree trunks and branches soften the landscape, do not allow it to become unnaturally geometric.
The colorful brush strokes also differ. The artist alternated between textured thick layers of paint and barely visible ones. Such painting manner added a dynamic element to the scene.
Aishat Daurbekova was born in the village of Fadeevka, Kostanay Region, Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. She studied at an art school in Grozny and then at the Painting Department of the Krasnodar Art School.
She often makes trips to mountainous areas and creates paintings en plein air. Many of the artist’s paintings depict natural views of her favorite places: ‘Snow in the Mountains’, ‘Erzy’, ‘Winter’, ‘Snow on the Table Mountain’, ‘Road to Armkhi’, ‘Autumn in the Mountains’, ‘Targim’, ‘Armkhi Stream’, ‘Along the Assa River’, ‘Mountain Landscape’, ‘In the mountains’.
At the same time Aishat Daurbekova does not only paint landscapes. Like her predecessors, such as the first professional artists of Ingushetia Khadzhi-Bekir Akhriev and Gazi-Magomed Daurbekov, as well as Zelimkhan Esmurziev and Khozh-Akhmed Imagozhev, she often depicts ancient and contemporary history of her people and the material and spiritual culture of the Ingush.
