Henry Matisse
Goldfish

#2
The painting “Goldfish” has a significantly reduced interior space: the painter shows a fragment of a greenhouse that has a round table in the center with a goldfish bowl on top. The dynamic composition is based on the movements of the fish swimming around in the bowl. The rhythm of the composition is supported by the plants’ green leaves and the curvatures of the table legs. The abundance of lively rounded curves is the foundation of the ornamental arrangement of the canvas area.

About the dynamic value of the composition
#8
The reverse perspective of the table intensifies the dynamic value of the composition. It suggests that Matisse studied medieval painting techniques, specifically Persian miniatures, old Russian icons, and frescoes. Matisse uses multiple points of view to create a complex perspective arrangement. For example, he uses a lateral perspective to paint the fish bowl and a top view to render the table top, but he returns to the lateral standpoint to complete the table leg.

About the pure colors
#4
The distribution of the pure colors is even more impressive. The main color focus is placed on the bright red fish. The white canvas around it intensifies the color. The green leaves contrast with the red fish. As a perceptive colorist, Matisse knew that the contrast of red and green is an intense one; that is why in his works he never placed these colors together in direct contrast. The painter resolves this contrast by introducing additional hues in a subtle balance of pink, lilac, and olive sub-tones. Pink and black shades intensify the impact of the green, and the pink halo around the fish bowl adds transparency to the whole palette of colors.
