Winter. Bridge. Ligachevo

Konstantin Fyodorovich Yuon - painter, theater artist, founder of a private art school, teacher and art theorist. His talent was recognized both in imperial Russia and in Soviet. He was one of the few who remained to live in his homeland after the 1917 revolution and drew inspiration for his later paintings in revolutionary events. He was also one of the initiators of the creation of fine art schools at the Moscow office of public education.

Konstantin  Fyodorovich Yuon (1875–1958)
Among the later works of K.F. Yuon stand out those that are written in the village Ligachevo in Solnechnogorsk district of Moscow region. It was there where the artist met a peasant girl Claudia, whom he soon married. In the village, the Yuon family had a house in which the artist worked from 1908 until the end of his life.

There are many winter landscapes left in Konstantin Yuon’s heritage, with views of old Moscow, the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, Rostov the Great and the village of Ligachevo, with dancing daughters-in-law, roller-coaster rides, midday sun and horseback riding. Nevertheless, Konstantin Fedorovich’s most favorite time of the year was early spring, March sunny days, when there is still snow and frost, but the sun is already warming the earth, the air is light and transparent, and the heart is filled with joy in anticipation of the coming spring.

In the permanent exhibition of the Penza Art Gallery named after K.A. Savitsky presented the work of Konstantin Fyodorovich Yuon ‘Winter. Bridge. Ligachevo’. The village, standing on the outskirts of a sunlit field, is buried in the snow. He is no longer on the river; the water is dark blue, the ice just went off. A wooden bridge is thrown across the river, over which the women crossed, wearing dark sleeveless jackets and bright colored skirts. The clouds in the sky reflect sunlight, and despite the gray snow cover, the day is clear and serene. Introducing bright colors into the seemingly monotonous landscape, Konstantin Fyodorovich creates a high spirits for the viewer with the expectation of spring, a village holiday for which women dressed smartly.

Yuon-landscape painter’s skill lies in the fact that he could transform the most ordinary nature’s look into an artistic image, attractive with poetry and sincerity. The artist often painted with pure colors, without mixing them on a palette, enhanced contrasts, used a wealth of shades of white so that the viewer saw a variety of colors of the winter village courtyard, field, and forest. He drew a lot from nature, paid close attention to the play of light and shadow, as did the French impressionists.

I had such a working method: to put the canvas on nature, and then continue to work at home in anticipation of a new, suitable moment in nature. I always knew by the clock at what moment the lighting I needed would come, and I would come an hour before that moment, and when that moment came, I would put down my brush and only observe the interconnection of all parts of the picture, its essence.
