The artist Konstantin Bogaevsky was born in 1872 in Feodosia. There he attended the workshop of Ivan Aivazovsky and took lessons from the famous Feodosian landscape painter Adolf Fessler. Afterwards Bogaevsky entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he studied in the workshop of Professor Arkhip Kuindzhi.

He was born among the stones of ancient Feodosia, worn out and faded like their names; wandered in childhood on its blurred hills and burial grounds; the Kenegez steppes taught his gaze to disassemble constellations and observe swirling clouds.

His friend, poet Maximilian Voloshin, wrote about the artist

After returning to Feodosia, Bogaevsky began to actively paint landscapes and take part in exhibitions of popular artistic societies: the Moscow Association of Artists, the Union of Russian Artists, and the World of Art. In the 1930s, the artist moved to a new creative stage: he began to paint industrial landscapes. The new era of grandiose socialist construction contributed to the emergence of new genres in the visual arts, among which was the industrial landscape, which glorified the first five-year plans, labor feats and nature transformed by human efforts.

After receiving the order, Bogaevsky went on creative official trips to the largest industrial construction sites: Dneproges, Donbas, Azovstal plant, and Baku oil fields. On construction sites, he created numerous sketches in pencil or watercolor, carefully fixing every detail, and back in the workshop he realized the artistic idea in the form of paintings. At the same time, even in the image of industrial facilities, where accuracy and reliability are important, the artist tried to apply a creative approach: he did not just photographically copy nature, but created industrial compositions based on sketches. Bogaevsky tried in every possible way to emphasize the monumentality and scale of industrial landscapes.

Conveying my general impression of what I saw <…>, in my composition I depict not a particular plant, but the whole sum of what struck me in this region of intense heroic labor.

The artist wrote, clarifying and affirming his method of active artistic transformation of nature
