Konstantin Bogaevsky was a Russian landscape and graphic artist of the Silver Age. He created the epic-romantic style of the landscape depicting the eastern part of Crimea called Cimmeria. Bogaevsky studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the class of A. Kuindzhi and participated in exhibitions of the artistic movement ¨Mir Isskustva’ (¨World of Art¨). He spent almost all his life in Feodosia.

From 1910 Bogaevsky began to paint classic landscapes after an inspiring trip to Europe where he saw the masterpieces of German and Italian Renaissance artists. The paintings created during that period of the artist’s carrier were obviously influenced by the work of Claude Lorrain, from whom Bogaevsky borrowed the idea of lighting. Nevertheless, the artistic path of Bogaevsky was always isolated and independent.

He achieved decorative and monumental images by stylizing the form, color and painting techniques. The harmonious and refined tones of his paintings resemble old tapestries. Russian artist Alexander Benois called Bogaevsky a “stylist, decorator, and poet”.

Bogaevsky always separated his work from nature as well as sketches from the creation of the painting. While working in the open air he was thinking only about the concept of the painting. Until the end of his life, Bogaevsky was creating the landscapes of his own “internal” country “Bogayevia”, which is characterized by captured silence and inner concentration. According to the artist he wanted to move away from everyday life and create a “different, fantastic world.”

Konstantin Bogaevsky created incomparable unique views of the eastern coast of Crimea. In the painting “Remembering Mantegna”, the artist shows the peculiar harsh beauty of a rocky landscape with stone ledges resembling images of mountainous territory in Italy, and depicts it in a style of the Italian Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna.
