At all times artists depicted their workshops. This theme is common in painting, but for each painter is very personal and somewhat sacred. After all, it is in the workshop that artworks are born which convey the mood and attitude of their creator.

The painting by Felix Ivanovich Assorov is pierced with light sadness. This emphasizes the winter landscape outside the window, familiar to the artist. The painter has always been closely associated with Uzlovaya. It was here that the artist came in 1960 after graduating from Moscow State Academic art school. After returning to his native Tula region, he began to lead a group of Employee Provisionary Department Uzlovskugol, participated in the organization of the children’s art school. And continued to paint. In the painter’s studio is one of his latest works, reflecting not only the mood, but also the life of the master.

The decoration is very modest. On the window, there is a simple curtain, stretched on a rope. On the windowsill there are objects that are used by the artist during his work: brushes in a clay pot and a half-burned candle in a candlestick. Among the items a clay Filimonovo toy-horse with colorful stripes stands out. Most likely, Assorov depicted it on his canvases in dedication to the Tula region, or planned to use it in a new work.

There are a green apple in crumpled paper and two tubes of used paint on the table. There is no picture of the canvas on the easel. The general mood of the picture indicates some creative search. As if the artist is looking for inspiration in simple things, but sometimes he is visited by thoughts of unfulfilled hopes. The violin has a broken string on the wall, and next to it hangs a reproduction from a magazine with a portrait of Cervantes — the author of the novel Don Quixote, the protagonist of which was an idealist and dreamer. It is possible that the dangling string and Cervantes are an image of Assorov’s own thoughts.

The melancholic mood of the painting emphasizes its color scheme. The master uses a gray-blue scale with brown fragments. From the window you can see the snow-covered village huts and hedges with contrasting shadows, the sun shining on the street. Winter is long and snowy, but this is just the time of year, which will be replaced by a more rosy, spring mood. And although now the artist is tormented by some internal disagreements, everything will fall into place with the arrival of the first warm days. And a painting will be with an apple and a Filimonovo horse-toy will be painted.
