Artist Felix Ivanovich Assorov in the picture ‘Corner of Uzlovaya’ depicted the winter city. Many of its inhabitants can recognize the place that the author depicted in the canvas at first glance. In the foreground, there is the highway of Sovetskaya street. A little further is one of the most popular places in the city, the Holy Dormition Church. Near the church we see small figures of children, playing in the snow drifts.
Despite the abundance of snow, the work of Felix Assorov is dominated by dark tones. The Church, though in the distance, adorns the picture. It seems that the painter didn’t depict cars on the road on purpose: there are only children, the Holy Dormition Church and the all-consuming winter silence.
The Holy Dormition Church in the Uzlovaya has a very interesting history. In 1899, the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother was built. There were several schools in the parish: a church school with one class, opened in 1900, a two-class school from the Ministry of public education, and a local three-class school, which began its work in 1912.
During the heyday of atheism, the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother was closed. The temple was converted into a club, and only in 1995 it began to fulfill its original purpose. At the same time, regular services were restored. Now, thanks to the work of the people serving there, the temple has regained its former greatness.
Felix Ivanovich Assorov, the author of this painting, was born on January 10, 1937 in the village of Kadushenki in Tula region. He graduated from the 1905 Moscow State Art School. Since 1960, he lived in Uzlovaya of the Tula region, where he worked tirelessly for the development of the city.
Felix Assorov led the art studio house of pioneers, a group of artists from the Employee Provisionary Department “Uzlovskugol”, was one of the founders and teachers of the children’s art school. He taught there until 2004.
His paintings were exhibited throughout Russia, several times they were shown to visitors at the Uzlovsky Museum of Fine Arts and Local History. Works of Felix Ivanovich participated in mobile exhibitions on city, regional and all-Russian scales. The painter’s works are kept in museums of Tula, Kursk, Oryol, in private collections of Russian and foreign collectors. His talent was marked by diplomas of the Union of artists, of which Felix Assorov has been a member since 1990, and the Ministry of culture of Russia. Currently the painter lives in Ryazan.
