You can see before you the painting ‘Mother’ by artist Felix Assorov. The canvas consists of three parts united by one theme. In the central part, the author depicted an elderly woman with her hands folded in front of her, wearing a black scarf and an old quilted jacket. The heroine sits on a bench, behind her there is a wall of a red house and a window framed with carved wooden inserts.
The components of the treble painting are two male portraits on the white walls. They are framed in wood and covered with embroidered towels. Judging by the title of the painting, it depicts a family: a mother and her two sons. According to the military uniform of the men and the mourning scarf of the woman, it can be assumed that the sons died at the front during the Great Patriotic War.
Look closely at the mother’s face. In the corners of the tightly compressed lips, in the line of arched eyebrows and deep wrinkles, frozen and inconsolable grief of irretrievable loss is visible. But the woman’s gaze is hard and piercing, full of pride for her sons. She knows that they are heroes who died on the battlefield, defending their beloved homeland.
The profound and dramatic canvas was painted on the wave of the strongest emotional surge experienced by the artist from the experiences of people’s grief. The painting with a deep moral meaning touches the viewer to the depths of the soul, reminds of the greatest tragedy of the 20th century and pushes to reflect not only the participants of the war and their descendants, but also the younger generation.
