Pyotr Ossovsky created the painting “Roads and Routes” in 1986. He depicted a landscape with a road and a high open boom barrier. To the left of the road is a small house, to the right — a pole, and on the road itself, one can see a human silhouette.
The sky with a low setting sun takes up most of the picture. Melted snow, general dark colors and the road going into the unknown create a minor mood. With these techniques, Ossovsky creates a feeling that in the depicted moment the life stage of the person walking along the road is coming to an end.
Pyotr Ossovsky was born in 1925 in Malaya Viska in the Ukrainian SSR. He graduated from the Moscow Secondary Art School and then studied at the Surikov State Art Institute. In 1954, he began participating in exhibitions.
Ossovsky’s artwork revolved around the stories and fates of people. He created genre scenes, as well as natural and urban landscapes. The artist was interested in provincial cities and the way people lived there. Many of his paintings were infused with themes and symbols of the road, railway tracks and crossings.
