The exhibition “Our Art — Our History” features items created by 20th-century craftsmen, including animal sculptor Andrey Martz, artist Mariam Aslamazyan, landscape artists Serafim Zverev and Boris Shamanov, “austere style” leaders Pyotr Ossovsky and Viktor Ivanov, and others.
In the 20th century, Russian art changed its direction: the Soviet ideology and glorification of communism builders advanced to the forefront, with patriotism and multinationality becoming the most important subject matters. A nonconformist art, though not recognized and often repressed by the authorities, was nevertheless strong enough to live and develop alongside the government-friendly propagandistic one.
The exhibition unfolds the multiple layers of Soviet society through sculptures, paintings, as well as decorative and applied arts items.
