Pyotr Konchalovsky created this painting in 1910, shortly before the opening of the first exhibition of the Jack of Diamonds group – the largest art association of the early avant-garde in Russia. In the early 20th century, artists sought free self-realisation, boldly and openly opposed the academic school and the traditions of realistic art. They were united by a passion for post-Impressionism, Cubism and Fauvism. Many avant-garde paintings shocked contemporaries with both themes and methods of depiction.
The avant-garde approach to portraying people was non-standard. Artists often used unnatural shades, painted different parts of the body intentionally large or disproportionately small. They paid great attention to the shape of the depicted object, its colour and mass.
In Pyotr Konchalovsky’s own paintings, researchers note techniques that are characteristic of works by Vincent Van Gogh, in particular – effective work with colour and expressive manner. Into the displayed portrait of his brother, Konchalovsky put everything that later became characteristic features of the image of a man in the Russian avant-garde: energy, self-confidence, strictness, spiritual and material stability.
The painting depicts Dmitry Konchalovsky. He was born in the village of Svetovy Luchy in the Kupyansky Uyezd of the Kharkiv Governorate in the family of the literary man, translator and publisher Pyotr Konchalovsky Senior.
