Pyotr Konchalovsky studied painting first at Paris’ Académie Julian and later at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts. He organized the Knave of Diamonds association together with Ilya Mashkov, Aristarkh Lentulov, and others.
Konchalovsky attempted in his early art to make every composition “powerful and whole” with the help of the canvas’ colour and texture, giving preference to simple compositions and discarding everything that was not important. Konchalovsky claimed inspiration from Matisse and Russian folk artists.
Spanish folk painting made a strong impression on Konchalovsky during a trip to Spain. On this foundation, Konchalovsky created the painting Spanish Dance, which is dominated by dark, subdued colours. In addition to the strong colour scheme, one can feel the influence of the Primitive folk style in the composition.
