Aristarkh Lentulov

Aristarkh Lentulov was a Russian and Soviet artist, painter, and scenographer. He was born on January 16, 1882, in the Penza Province. His father, a village priest, passed away when the boy was two years old. Aristarkh’s Mother wanted him to follow in his Father’s footsteps, and sent him to a religious school. When he was 16, the future artist dropped out of the school to dedicate his life to art, which he had been fond of from an early age.

Aristarkh Lentulov entered the Penza Art School headed by the famous Itinerant Konstantin Savitsky. Later he studied under Nikolai Pimonenko at the Kiev Art College, and at the studio of Dmitry Kardovsky in Saint Petersburg. The artist studied works by classical painters and participated in various exhibitions. One of the most significant exhibitions was the Venok[Wreath]-Stephanos in 1909.

In 1911, Lentulov decided to continue his education in Paris and entered an art school, the Palette Academy. Works by Eugene Delacroix and Theodore Gericault appealed to him; however, it was Robert Delaunay, a co-founder of Orphism, a new art style, who had a particularly strong influence on him, which fully manifested after some time. The artists of this movement used a combination of primary colors and intersection of curved lines to convey movement dynamics and rhythm musicality in their paintings.

Aristarkh Lentulov returned to Russia in 1912. His acquaintance with Western masterpieces influenced the artist’s work: he painted seamlessly, with inspiration, generously filling his paintings with sunlight. During this period, the artist created a number of architectural landscapes, including the present painting titled Landscape. Their distinctive features are rich colours, emotional expressiveness, and the aspiration to manifest the music of the image through paints. For the extraordinary sunniness of his paintings, Lentulov’s friends called him Yarila (a Slavic deity of spring fertility).

The artist expressed his love of diversity of colours and splendor by decorating his canvases with gold leaf, attaching gold foil or embossed coloured paper, and covering individual canvas areas with bronze and silver paint imitating metal mounting of Russian icons. He combined different styles of the early 20th century, and the bright palette and decorative effect of his paintings became a reflection of the artist’s love of theatricality.

After the October Revolution, Aristarkh Lentulov became a member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia, the organiser and chairman of the Society of Moscow Artists, and took up teaching. The artist also devoted much attention to his work on design of theatrical productions, including The Demon opera and The Spanish Artist performance.
