The canvas combines two opposite principles of space organization. On the right side of the landscape, the space is relatively three-dimensional, that is, it combines length, width and height.

The clouds and tree crowns in the upper left corner look like evenly-hued color spots. Such combination of spatial principles is often found in the works by Aristarkh Lentulov.

For the picture, the artist chose bright, vibrant colors and a rich palette. The landscape has more than one source of illumination; it seems that light is coming from everywhere. In his book The Memoirs, Aristarkh Lentulov wrote:
‘My passion for the sun and bright light has accompanied me, so to say, from the day I was born. In this regard, I’ve made extremely interesting experiments. In my landscapes, I used contrasts of light and shadow, from black in the shaded areas to pure chrome in the light’.

Aristarkh Lentulov was born in 1882 in the modern Penza region. He came from the family of a village priest. The future painter loved to draw since very childhood and did not want to follow in his father’s footsteps. In 1906, Lentulov moved to the capital of the Russian Empire, where he entered the painting studio of Dmitry Kardovsky.
