The small painting Bathing relates to the period when Cézanne came up with the idea of monumental paintings with nude people in landscapes, in which his image of the universe could be constructed. Outstretched flexible figures become a unified whole with the landscape. They are painted in bluish and reddish colors with a little white paint. The landscape background serves as a beginning that provides architectural structure. The scaling relation between the bathers’ bodies and the landscape makes the painting resemble a monumental canvas despite its small size. Cézanne found this concept of synthesis after a long search. It was finally implemented in his “Large Bathers” (1905-1906).
