The painting Mont Sainte- Victoire depicts one of the last views that Cézanne captured of his beloved Sainte-Victoire Mountain. He built a studio not far from the road, at Les Lauves, in 1901. Here, the artist would put his easel on a low-sloped hill and work tirelessly. The almost square, crystal-shaped fragments of painting, which constitute the complex and agitated texture, impress us with their richness of color and multi-layered structure. The nature motif lacks descriptive detail. Farmers’ houses and greenery are almost indistinguishable, while the spatial composition is sophisticated. The artist builds it based on the dynamic alternation of planes. Cézanne is almost completely successful in freeing himself from the objectified influence of nature. The reality of the painting becomes key for him. The crystal surface of the canvas that overpowers all composition details directly anticipates the new artistic language of the early 20th century.
