Stanislav Zhukovsky
Flowerbed
#13
Stanislav Zhukovsky was a famous landscape painter. He decided to take up painting against his father’s wishes: he left for Moscow, added two years to his real age and entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture as a non-matriculated student. Famous Realism artists such as Sergei Korovin, Isaac Levitan, Vasily Polenov became his teachers. At the school, however, he finally chose the landscape genre as the main direction of his work.

Zhukovsky painted all his canvases from nature. He preferred to work quickly in order to capture and transfer the minutest details of the changing world and the feeling that arose in the moment.

Zhukovsky attempted to paint pictures that would evoke in the audience the feeling that the view had been selected at random. He rendered reality in such a way as if he did not make a careful choice of the scene, but rather captured what he suddenly looked at. This made his paintings look more like studies.

In art history, Stanislav Zhukovsky is called the master of the manor landscape painting. The artist depicted real parks, flowerbeds, ponds, old buildings with love and great realism. He spent a lot of time traveling around the provinces of central Russia, studying the estates of the nobility and immersing himself in the atmosphere of the so-called “nests of the gentry”.

Zhukovsky prided himself in being called a Russian impressionist, but he did not like it when his paintings were compared with the works of French painters.

Monet, Cezanne and others are wonderful and very sincere artists. Nevertheless, I can”t stand it when [our artists] paint Russian nature, adjusting it to the canvases by Cezanne. When I see such works, I literally become sick.

For “Flowerbed” painting, Zhukovsky chose a simple subject. He depicted a scene of a peaceful and calm country life — a flowerbed with blooming white and pink asters, the corner of a two-story building with an overhanging balcony.

In the painting, the artist used stark color contrasts — a brick building, a white curtain and some green grass against the blue sky. The painting is quite laconic, not overloaded with details. This helped Zhukovsky to render the air, the balance between all the elements and the wholeness of the composition.
