Stanislav Yulianovich Zhukovsky was a famous Russian artist who created lyrical landscapes and depicted manors and interiors. He left behind an impressive body of work.

Zhukovsky, creating soulful images of nature, always truthfully painted it. He skillfully combined the depiction of its states, moments and phenomena with the poetry of his own inner life. The artist’s works are both an expression of the “soul of nature” and a receptacle of the “soul of the artist”, filled with thrilling feelings and experiences.

Stanislav Zhukovsky’s work “Dunes”, which is housed in the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts, was created in 1904, during the true heyday of the artist’s talent.

The well-thought-out composition of the painting “Dunes”, which allows one to capture the landscape in a single glance, is quite characteristic of Stanislav Zhukovsky. The foreground is an image of a sandy hill overgrown with trees; the second plane presents a boundless expanse of water and a bright sky above it. Such a combination of the active verticals of pine trees with the calm horizontals of the ground and water ensures the balance of the elements, making the painting comprehensive. The vibrant play of light penetrating the entire fabric of the canvas and the shadows cast from the tree trunks allow the artist to convey in the landscape his freshest and most direct impressions of the diversity and fullness of nature’s life in its various manifestations. The color palette he used is an innovation for the artist. During that period, Zhukovsky used more energetic tones and brighter and contrasting shades (the so-called cheerful, or major, color palette).

In addition, texture began to play an active role in the artist’s works: the brush stroke became the main means of artistic expression. Large, relief, almost tangible brush strokes, echoing the curves of forms in a free manner of painting, enhanced the material nature of the depicted, as if emphasizing the dynamism and impetuosity of being.

The Kaluga landscape in its expressiveness of perception and integrity of design is an optimistic hymn to the poetics of nature. However, it also breaks through the instantaneity of the image, expands the boundaries of vision and reveals the depth of the creative spirit of the artist himself.
