Russian painter Stanislav Zhukovsky depicted the interior of the manor owned by the Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich, the younger brother of Nicholas II. He painted with detailed bold brushstrokes the luxurious interior with repeated floral motifs. The dense composition is based on the alternation of round objects: the table, the oval frame of the painting and the light circle of the carpet. The color palette combines warm shades of wood and bright color parches of bouquets, carpet and fabric patterns.

Zhukovsky was a descendant of an aristocratic family — he was born in Grodno province in the family of an aristocrat who lost his title for taking part in the Polish rebellion of 1863. He revealed talent for painting in his childhood but his father did not support his art ambitions. When Zhukovsky left for Moscow to study for a painter, his family took it as a flight from home and disowned him. Although already in the early ХХ century the artist was considered one of the most famous landscape painters of the impressionist trend, his father never forgave him and contemptuously called him a ‘scribbler’ until the end of his life.
Zhukovsky graduated from the Moscow School of Arts, Sculpture and Architecture in 1901 where he experienced the great influence of Isaac Levitan, the master of ‘mood landscape’. In 1907, he was granted the title of academician ‘for prominence in fine arts’. He participated in exhibition of the influential art association ‘The World of Art’ and the Association of Itinerants and became the full member of the latter in 1903.

Zhukovsky was enchanted by the way of life of the old aristocracy and travelled extensively in central Russia studying manor estates. In the same year as ‘Brasovo Estate’ he painted ‘The Corner Living Room. (Rozhdestveno Estate) where Vladimir Nabokov’s family lived.

A year later, he depicted the majestic interiors of the Moscow estate of counts Sheremetyev in his painting ‘Kuskovo. Grand Entrance Hall’. After the revolution the artist left for Poland and still continued to devote his painting to the bygone imperial era — in the 1920’s he painted “Personal Suite of Rooms of Nicholas II in Lazienki Palace in Warsaw”.

Landscapes also occupied a distinct place in Zhukovsky’s art. The painting ‘Autumn Evening’, 1905 is especially demonstrative of the impressionist influence — the trees are painted with very large single color brushstrokes, their silhouettes blurred in the setting sun.

The ‘Dam’ of 1909 and ‘River. Steep Bank’ of 1918 are painted in a more sober manner. Echoes of landscape painting are often found in many interior paintings of the artist — they almost always portray windows with views of nature.

Many friends were persuading Zhukovsky to return from emigration to the USSR, but he chose to stay in Poland where he opened a private school of painting. During World War II the artist was arrested by Nazis and died in 1944 in the Prushkov concentration camp.
