The painting ‘Autumnal Motif on the Vetluga River, Near the Vill. of Bogorodskoe’ was created by Nikolay Nedozhdiy, a Soviet and Russian landscape painter. He was born in 1910 in the village of Voronkov near Kiev, and, being a young man, he entered the Kiev School of Arts, but failed to complete his studies due to financial difficulties in his family. Fortunately, this did not prevent Nedozhdiy from working as a painter in Leningrad, becoming a participant of the USSR’s Union of Artists, and even from taking part in a competition for the chief painter of the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theatre.
Before the Great Patriotic War, he and his family moved to Tashkent, where he was enlisted into the Red Army. Having gone through the whole war, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star, as well as a Medal for Combat Service and Medal for Bravery. In recent years, until his death in 2003, the painter lived in Gorky (nowadays Nizhny Novgorod). During this time, he still devoted a great deal of time to painting. He often came to visit his son Nikolai, who lived in the village of Bogorodskoe of Varnavinsky district, and fell in love with the muted beauty of the local landscapes. It is no coincidence that he dedicated his “Kolkhoz “Testaments of Ilyich” on the Vetluga River’ to these places, along with a whole series of paintings.
This painting shows Nedozhdiy’s love for the landscapes of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Here he showed the swift-passing moment of the summer that is coming to an end, but is still warm. The nature is flooded with sunlight, and one can almost feel the warm breeze, but trees, shrubs, grass are already beginning to fade and turn yellow. On the right, a birch is written in greater detail, it stands out, being located on a steep green shore, which goes down to the edge of Lake Somovik. It is famous among local fishermen, and the painter himself has fished here several times. From all sides, paths lead to the lake and circle around, and silhouettes of walking people can be seen in the distance: this is how the author showed that the lake is loved by local residents.
The painting “Kolkhoz “Testaments of Ilyich” on the Vetluga River’, which is in the collection of the Varnavino Museum, also makes part of the series of Vetluga landscapes. In this painting, he painted the taiga Vetluga River on a clear summer day, using soft pastel colors. Like ‘Autumn Motif on the Vetluga River’, this landscape is dreamy and serene: probably, the painter had such feelings, while living in these places.
