The Picture Gallery of the Varnavino Museum of History and Art opened in 2017, but the work on this establishment as a project began much earlier: for many years the museum’s administration though it all over and formed its own art collection, with the paintings donated, purchased and even ordered. The representative exposition of the gallery shows works by both Russian major masters and young Nizhny Novgorod painters that define the image and the spirit of the new Russian art. Special attention is paid to the main genres of realistic painting that are landscapes and historical paintings. Most of the paintings somehow deal with the nature and the culture of the majestic land of Povetluzhje.
