Karl Bryullov painted a picture ‘Peri and Angel’ in the period between 1839 and 1843. It is based on the plot of Vasily Zhukovsky’s romantic poem “Lalla Rookh: Paradise and the Peri”. The artist did not finish his masterpiece. There is an underpainting (unfinished part) on the right side of the canvas. It is a paint layer, which, as a rule, is later covered with layers of translucent glaze paints.
The picture shows a dramatic moment of the robber’s soul transformation in the moment when he met Peri — a fallen angel who needs to accomplish a miracle to return to Paradise.
