Karl Bryullov
Peri and Angel
#2
Karl Bryullov painted a picture ‘Peri and Angel’ in the period between 1839 and 1843. It is based on the plot of Vasily Zhukovsky’s romantic poem “Lalla Rookh: Paradise and the Peri”. The artist did not finish his masterpiece. There is an underpainting (unfinished part) on the right side of the canvas. It is a paint layer, which, as a rule, is later covered with layers of translucent glaze paints.

The picture shows a dramatic moment of the robber’s soul transformation in the moment when he met Peri — a fallen angel who needs to accomplish a miracle to return to Paradise.

…And hope and feeling which had slept
From boyhood’s hour that instant came
Fresh o’er him and he wept--he wept!
Blest tears of soul-felt penitence!
In whose benign, redeeming flow
Is felt the first, the only sense
Of guiltless joy that guilt can know.
And now — behold him kneeling there
By the child’s side, in humble prayer,
While the same sunbeam shines upon
The guilty and the guiltless one.
Vasily Zhukovsky, “Paradise and the Peri”
#5
“Peri-spirit, one of those attracted to falling away from God, altered his mind and returned to Paradise. However, flown back to its doors, he finds them locked. “There is a hope that you could enter, but bring a worthy gift …”, said the angel who guarded them. Peri went back on the earth. He found a penitent, took his tear and carried it. Before approaching Paradise, he saw that all the doors were already open for him. Therefore, such tear must be brought to the Lord. There is joy in Heaven when someone cries and laments, feeling like a culprit. And this is the most reliable way for us’, paraphrased the plot of Zhukovsky’s “very moralistic” poem the Holy hierarch Theophan the Recluse.

Against the background of the picture Karl Bryullov depicted a minaret — a tower of the masjid which is used by a muezzin (In Islam, the official who proclaims the call to prayer on Friday for the public worship and the call to the daily prayer five times a day) to call all religious people for a prayer. While working over the painting he drew his focus toward sketches and drawings done in Constantinople where in 1835, he spent three months in a residence of the Russian envoy. The artist created many masterpieces dedicated to both realistic and fantastic east themes. After a trip to Turkey, he created the paintings “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai”, “A Turkish Girl”, “In a Harem”, “An Interrupted Date”.

Bryullov often painted his pictures during one session with a movable opaque strokes covered with glazes. The critics marked the color scheme of his paintings. His contemporaries told that when Karl Bryullov became a representative of Russian painting, it began to get rid of the “shyness and blackness of colors.”
