A rave of colors, a wealth of shades and a warm color scheme in the picture create the sense of celebration. In a letter to his friend Boris Krasin Konstantin Korovin wrote:
‘Beauty and joy of life. Conveying of this joy is the purpose of the painting, these are pieces of my canvas, pieces of myself. Exploring this side of my talent and getting interested in it, many artists have followed and shall follow me… It’s me, it’s my honoring of life, of joy’.

Everything in the picture is imbued with the fragrant aroma of the south. The main character of the picture is dressed in a colorful outfit: a bright red skirt, a white blouse and a colorful jacket. Leaning against the wall, she sits on a wooden bench. The woman has a southern appearance: dark skin, brown eyes and dark hair. The hostess' pose, her facial expression, the tilt of her head give the impression that the artist was painting his model during their lively conversation. Konstantin Korovin sought to capture the occasional moment and convey the instantaneous impression in his painting.

Konstantin Korovin was born in 1861 in a merchant family in Moscow. His parents were fond of painting, and from his childhood the future artist was growing in a creative environment. In 1875 he entered the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture. His teachers were well-known landscape painters Alexey Savrasov and Vasily Polenov.
In 1884 Konstantin Korovin became a member of the informal association of the Russian intellectuals - the so called Abramtsevo art circle. Its founder was a philanthropist and art enthusiast Savva Mamontov. In that circle the artist first tried himself as a theatrical decorator.

Konstantin Korovin is considered to be the first Russian Impressionist. His delicate landscapes and lyrical portraits have replaced the genre of realism. Korovin was one of the participants in the creative association of painters of the early 20th century Union of Russian Artists. Members of that community were looking for a new format to express their perception of life. With the help of saturated colors, washed-out images and discontinuous strokes, the painters conveyed their admiration for the beauty of nature and the human soul.

Konstantin Korovin’s work influenced a whole range of Russian landscape painters: Stanislav Zhuchkovsky, Ivan Petrovichev, Leonard Turzhansky. In the collection of the museum there are three paintings by Konstantin Korovin.
