The exposition of the Samara Regional Museum of Fine Arts is dedicated to the works of the Russian fine arts of the 18th — early 20th century. Visitors can track in detail the development of the Russian painting from the first portraits, resembling Old Russian icons, to avant-garde works.

The painting collection began to take shape in 1897. Many works came to the museum from the private collection of the Samara merchants Shikhobalovs. The exhibition boasts the works by the first Russian portrait painter Fyodor Rokotov and founder of the ceremonial portraits Dmitry Levitsky, landscapes by great Russian artists Vladimir Borovikovsky and Ilya Repin, avant-garde paintings by Kazimir Malevich and Olga Rozanova.
