The Feodor Chaliapin House on Novinsky Boulevard houses a number of works by Konstantin Alexeevich Korovin. The artist’s landscapes were highly appreciated by critics. Feodor Chaliapin said, “They are not ornaments for the walls of the dining room, but rather a splendid impression that fills me with joy.”

Chaliapin met Konstantin Korovin in Nizhny Novgorod. The actor and the artist were such close friends that even their summer cottages were located near each other: Korovin’s — in Okhotino and Chaliapin’s — in Ratukhino. The singer emigrated in 1922 and the painter — in 1923. Korovin settled in the same city as his friend — in Paris.

In 1929, the artist’s solo exhibition “Impressions of Paris” was held in Paris. His works were popular with both locals and emigrants, because the artist managed to combine in his style the artistic features of both France and Russia. After this exhibition the painter Ilya Repin wrote to Korovin,

Konstantin Korovin could often be found late in the evening on Montmartre Hill, on the corner of a tiny street, where he would make himself comfortable with a specially invented lamp to illuminate his canvas to catch the emotions of the city.

Korovin began to draw Paris as a child, before he visited it. The artist recalled himself at the age of nine,

I didn’t like cities, and it was only the stories about Paris told by my grandmother, Ekaterina Volkova, that struck me. That was when, from her accounts, I first learned what boulevards, cafes, coiffeurs, and outfits are like in Paris. I remember once I even drew a picture of Paris — the colors were astonishingly bright! , ‘It looks like it …, ’ my grandmother said.
