The core of the permanent collection of the Orenburg Regional Museum of Fine Arts consists of works of Lukian Popov, a Realist painter associated with the Itinerants. He had been born in Orenburg, worked in the city for a long time, and until his dying day he dedicated his canvases to his homeland: He painted local nature, peasants, and produced genre pictures. In addition to Popov’s works, the collection features paintings of famous Soviet and Russian masters: seascape painters Ivan Aivazovsky and Lev Lagorio, Itinerant Alexei Savrasov and impressionist Stanislav Zhukovsky, Social realists Vassily Yakovlev and Serafima Ryangina, and virtuoso graphic artist Nikolai Prokhorov. The permanent collection of the museum also has icons on display, mainly those painted in the 19th century; they belong to various icon-painting schools.
