The photographer Grigory Vasilyevich Safontsev worked at the turn of the 20th century, the time of the most decisive events in Russian history. His photographs are valuable cultural and historical artifacts, which can be used to study the culture of the Kursk Governorate of the late 19th — early 20th century.
On March 2, 1917, people in the Kursk area heard about the overthrow of the monarchy, and the next day a Temporary Executive Committee was organized. The soldiers returning home became local leaders.
In Borisovka, the largest settlement of the Grayvoronsky Uyezd, the Bolshevik victory in the Revolution was announced on October 28 (November 10), 1917, but the change was not immediately felt.
The year 1918 began with a rally organized by former front-line soldiers at the building of the volost administration. Its result was the election of a Council of Soldiers’ Deputies. It was decided that 100 households elect two representatives.
The next step was the unification into a single governing body with the Council of Peasant Deputies.
Following the example of the administration of Podol, a resolution was made in Borisovka: the land, forests, estates and inventory belonging to the landlords were to be managed by the new land committee. Mills, grain mills, creameries and other enterprises also came under public control. In addition, it was decided to impose a tax on the former representatives of the monetary elite — these funds were used to pay benefits to war invalids and soldiers, and salaries to doctors and teachers.
However, it was not easy to fully implement the new orders: the White Army from the Stavka retreating to the Don began to gather in the south of the Kursk Governorate. The Belgorod Revolutionary Committee was forced to declare a state of siege. In February 1918, German troops began the offensive, and then the detachments of Symon Vasylyovych Petliura. In April 1918, Borisovka was occupied by the White Army. A tsarist officer was appointed head of the volost committee. He demanded to hand over weapons and return money and property to the landlords. At the same time, the German troops freely transported grain and cattle to Germany.
The creation of partisan detachments and underground resistance groups came next. Alexander Ivanovich Sklyarenko, the hero of the presented photo, commanded the Pokrovsky Partisan Detachment, which participated in the liberation of the county from the invaders.
Later, in February 1919, Sklyarenko joined the county committee elected at the First Grayvoronsky County Conference of the Russian Communist Party.
