Ivan Shishkin
Birch Tree Forest
#2
Ivan Shishkin painted ‘Birch Tree Forest’ in 1896. He portrayed the real place — the birch tree forest near Preobrazhenskaya station in the vicinity of Petersburg. The painting shows a shady path among tall trees. The painter gives a realistic portrayal of the field woodland with details of rough bark, different pattern on birch trees, curved branches on trunks.

By the time the painting was created contemporaries had already named Shishkin ‘the hero of Russian forest’ for his loyalty to the subject. Another nickname ‘leaf accountant’ pointed to his artistic method. In his paintings Shishkin focused smallest details: the structure of wood, grass, leaves.By the time the painting was created contemporaries had already named Shishkin ‘the hero of Russian forest’ for his loyalty to the subject. The painter learnt to love forest landscapes back in his childhood: he grew up in Elabuga with age long trees growing along the banks of the Kama river. He took frequent walks in their midst, and researchers believe that the forests of Elabuga determined the favorite subject of his paintings.

Shishkin started painting very early, however his parent did not support his passion. His mother was especially acrimonious, concerned that her son is growing to be a ‘house painter’ and called his drawings ‘paper scribbling’. Even when the painter received worldwide recognition, she was still aggrieved about his choice.

In his book Recollections about Itinerants Yakov Minchenkov wrote: ‘Shishkin wanted to invite to his place his mother – a peasant who never visited a city. He wrote to her and she ventured to come. When she walked into rooms with paintings in guilt frames hanging everywhere on the walls and saw other items of city living, she reproached her son: “Oh, Ivan! Why did you write to me that you were some kind of a painter, while you are a general”. The woman was certain that only generals could live so well.

Nevertheless, Shishkin truly excelled as a painter. He was rightly called “the pillar of Russian landscape”. His paintings were praised by Emperor Alexander III, and Nicholas II was eager to buy “On the Edge of Pine Tress Forest”. However, the independent painter never bowed to power and chose to sell the painting to his nephew Nikolai Stakheyev.
