Attached is an expert report from the Grabar Center on the chemical and physical analysis of the canvas and its paint composition. Experts determined that the canvas was not particularly expensive, being made of hemp. The paint composition and composition led the experts to conclude that it could not have been used before the late 19th century. Numerous restoration interventions were made. A styrene-acrylic topcoat was used during the restoration; this was not a professional restoration.
These findings support the theory that the work was a trophy, meaning it was brought back in 1944-1945 by a soldier. The owner subsequently decided to restore the painting because it was black and white. He likely wanted to give it a more relaxed and luminous feel.
