During his journey around Italy, Albert Marquet spent some time in Naples. He rented a room overseeing the bay with an excellent view of Vesuvius on the horizon. It was there that he painted his landscape “Vesuvius”. Sailing ships, barges, and boats are depicted on the flickering waters of the bay.

The painter works in wide articulated strokes, with the white primer of the canvas shining between them. Marquet prefers the harmony of tender colors over the garish paint spots favored by his peers. The painting’s atmosphere is saturated with the fresh maritime air.
