This landscape belongs to the series of art works that can be defined as “reminiscences.” This is how Camille Corot himself defined these paintings. The reminiscence artworks are based on Corot’s traveling experience in Italy in his early years as well as his experiences with French nature. The “Evening” is an Italian reminiscence. This artwork definitely reveals the influence of Claude Lorrain, a French landscape painter of the 17th century. Corot was a true fan of the ideal lyrical landscapes by Claude Lorrain, which explored a technical issue – lighting at different times of the day. The effect of late afternoon sunlight transforming all of the landscape details is carefully rendered in Corot’s landscape.
