Camille Corot painted this study from nature in the company of Georges Tardif, whom he visited in Argenteuil. The motif of a road leading into the distance past the tall bell tower, closing off the perspective, occurs in a number of Corot’s paintings from the mid-1860s. Camille Corot’s art works painted in studio by memory are no different from those painted from life.
