In the painting Diana Bathing, the forest becomes a scene for the mythological goddess Diana and her nymph. Corot combines two contradicting principles in the painting: the classical treatment of the body of the goddess, with a precision of form and conventional light and shadow, and the trembling and blurred quality of the foliage, characteristic of mood landscapes. The painting was created in 1874, when the First Impressionist Exhibition took place in Paris. For Corot, it was the final year of his life.
